Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty
The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
