No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
